भारतक सुप्रसिद्ध अन्तरिक्षयात्री कल्पना चावला – जन्म १७ मार्च १९६२ आ मृत्यु १ फरवरी २००३ ।
कक्षा १२ केर बोर्ड परीक्षा उत्तीर्ण कयलाक बाद, कल्पना चावला इंजीनियरिंग करियर कें अपन सपना पूरा करबाक निर्णय कयलीह । हुनकर पिताजी एहि पक्ष मे नहि रहथि आर हुनका डॉक्टर या स्कूल टीचर बनबाक सलाह देलनि, लेकिन कल्पना फ्लाइट इंजीनियर बनबाक लेल दृढ़ रहथि ।
कल्पना केँ अपन माँक बिना शर्त समर्थन भेटलनि आर हुनक पिता अन्ततः हुनकर बात मानि लेलनि । तेँ कल्पना केँ पंजाब इंजीनियरिंग कॉलेज मे दाखिला भेट गेलनि । काउंसलिंग के दरम्यान, ओ एयरोनॉटिकल इंजीनियरिंग केँ चुनलीह, एना करयवाली ओ एकमात्र लड़की छलीह ।
हैरान काउंसलर लोकनि हुनका एयरोनॉटिकल इंजीनियरिंग मे शामिल होइ सँ रोकबाक पूरा कोशिश कयलनि कियैक तँ देश मे एहि क्षेत्र मे नौकरीक सीमित अवसर छलैक, लेकिन कल्पना तैयो हारि नहि मानलीह ।
जखन ओ सब हुनका सँ पुछलखिन जे हुनकर दोसर विकल्प कि छन्हि, त ओ जवाब देलखिन जे हुनका लग दोसर कोनो विकल्प नहि छन्हि । ओ फ्लाइट इंजीनियर बनबाक लेल दृढ़ छलीह आर दुनियाक कोनो चीज हुनका दोसर स्ट्रीम चुनबाक लेल राजी नहि करा सकैत छल ।
कॉलेज मे, कल्पना अपन दिल ओ आत्मा केँ अपन पढ़ाइ मे लगा देलीह । लड़की सभक लेल कोनो छात्रावास नहि छलैक, ताहि हेतु ओ गैरेज उपर एकटा छोट सन कोठली मे असगरे रहैत छलीह आ हर दिन साइकिल सँ साइकिल सँ कॉलेज जाइत रहथि । अपन खाली समय मे, ओ स्वयं केँ कराटे सिखेलीह (आ ब्लैक बेल्ट बनि गेलीह) संगहि अपन पसंदीदा लेखक सब मे (ऐन रैंड, ओरियाना फलासी आ रिचर्ड बाख) केर किताब सब पढ़य मे समर्पित कय देलीह ।
हुनका क्लासिक रॉक (गीत) सुनब पसिन छलन्हि, खासकय ७० केर दशकक बैंड डीप पर्पल आर सूफी संगीत (कोलंबियाक मलबा सँ आबिदा परवीन, नुसरत फतेह अली खान, रवि शंकर और हरिप्रसाद चौरसिया केर सीडी सब भेटल छलैक) ।
कल्पना अपन कॉलेजक पत्रिका मे छात्र संपादक आर कॉलेजक एयरो क्लब आ एस्ट्रो सोसाइटीक संयुक्त सचिव सेहो बनलीह ।
वास्तव मे, ओ अपन पहिल वर्ष मे वार्षिक सम्मेलन मे ‘अंतरिक्ष मे समय-चूक’ (जे आइंस्टीन केर सापेक्षताक सिद्धांत सँ सम्बन्धित छलैक) ताहिपर एक गोट पेपर प्रस्तुत कयकेँ अपन कॉलेज केँ आश्चर्यचकित कय देलीह !
१९८२ मे, कल्पना अपन बैच मे तेसर स्थान प्राप्त कयलीह आर अपन कॉलेज सँ पास होइवाली पहिल महिला एयरोनॉटिकल इंजीनियर बनलीह ।
After completing her class 12 board exams with flying colours, Kalpana Chawla decided to pursue her dream of an engineering career. Her father was not in favour and advised her to become a doctor or a school teacher but Kalpana was determined to become a flight engineer.
Kalpana had her mother’s unconditional support and her father finally gave in.
So Kalpana was admitted to Punjab Engineering College. During counselling, she chose aeronautical engineering, the only girl to do so.
The surprised counsellors tried their best to dissuade her from joining aeronautical engineering as it had limited job opportunities in the country but Kalpana refused to budge.
When they asked her what was her second option, she replied that she had none. She was determined to become a flight engineer, and nothing on earth could convince her to choose another stream.
In college, Kalpana put her heart and soul into her studies. There was no girl’s hostel, so she lived alone in a tiny room over a garage, cycling to college every day. In her free time, she devoted herself to learning karate (she became a black belt) and reading books by her favourite authors (Ayn Rand, Oriana Fallaci and Richard Bach).
She enjoyed listening to classic rock, especially of the 70s band Deep Purple, and sufi music (Columbia’s debris included CDs of Abida Parveen, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Ravi Shankar and Hariprasad Chaurasia).
Kalpana also became a student editor at her college magazine and the joint secretary of the college’s Aero Club and Astro Society.
In fact, she surprised her college by presenting a paper on ‘Time-Lapse in Space’ (that dealt with Einstein’s theories of relativity) at the annual conference in her first year!
In 1982, Kalpana secured the 3rd rank in her batch to become the first woman aeronautical engineer to pass out from her college.
